Chapter 1 Overview
This week we read through chapter 1 in CM2770, and let me tell you this chapter had a TON of material. Lets start by going through the learning objectives for the chapter. Learning objective one was to define "convergence". Convergence is the coming together of computing, telecommunications, and media in a digital environment. So many examples come to mind, but first lets classify the types of convergence. There are three types of convergence: technological, economic and cultural. Technological convergence is when print, audio and video media comes together to create something like the Kindle. Economic convergence is the converging of internet or telecommunications companies with traditional media companies, like content and distributer companies coming together. Not to be confused with consolidation, which refers to the process of traditional media companies growing larger through mergers and acquisitions. Cultural convergence is when the values, believes and practices shared by a group of people merge with another. These could be like groups like Irish-Americans.
There are 8 major changes taking place in communication because of convergence. These are: media organization, media type, media content, media use, media distribution, media audience, media profession, and attitudes and values. One of the small changes in media organization because of convergence is the price of internet based media dropping because of the easy access everyone has to computers now. One change in media type is the change from print media and the switch to online media. One change in media audience is the easy access to communicate to the masses online. One small change to media content is how easily it can be created by distribution companies, which creates all types on convergence in the economic world. The same changes can be see in in media use and distribution. The media profession has changed in the way that now journalists need to be able to capture their own video, photo and audio in addition to being able to write.
Mass communication is communication to a large group that are usually unknown to the sender. The basic theories about this are the General Mass Media theory, where communication is largely one way, and is from one or a few people to many people. Sources usually don't know their audience, and audiences are seen as passive recipients of the messages. The next theory is called the Transmission Model by Shannon and Weaver where there is an information source that sends a message and the flow is one way and ends at the destination. The last theory is Schramm's simplified communication model and is states that there is a flow of a message from a source to a destination where it is decoded.
There are four functions of mass communication: Surveillance (journalism provides info about processes, issues, events.), Correlation (when the media interprets and ascribes meaning to issues), Cultural Transmission (dominant culture goes from one generation to the next or to immigrants), and Entertainment (performed by three previous functions but its content is specifically designed for entertainment.)
